Acoustics 101 - What is Sound?
25/08/2022

Sound refers to a vibration that spreads as a transverse wave through a transmission medium which may be solid, liquid, or gas. You perceive a sound when a series of vibrations from an object, together with the vibrations of its surrounding molecules, reach your ears.
What are the significant properties of sound?
Loudness
The loudness of a sound is related to the Amplitude of the transverse wave. The louder the sound, the higher its vibration is. Loudness relates to the sensation your ears can feel when you hear a sound.
Pitch
The pitch of a sound is related to the Frequency of the transverse wave. The range of audible frequency for humans is between 20 Hz (Hertz) to 20 kHz (Kilohertz). In music, Pitch is how high or low a sound is.
Timbre
Timbre is the tone quality that differentiates sounds with the same frequency. It is the reason why your voice will never be the same as anyone’s voice.
"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration."
– Nikola Tesla
What is the significance of Acoustics?
Sound is the principle, structure and reason supporting the establishment of Acoustics. Acoustics is the scientific discipline dealing with the production, control, transmission, reception, and effects of sound. A professional who works in the field of acoustics is called an Acoustician and an expert who works in the application of acoustic technology is called an Acoustic Engineer. Since noise affects human beings physically and mentally, Acoustics is a great tool to address noise pollution through innovative solutions.
